Proverbs Chapter Two: Verses 2-6

Make your ear attentive to wisdom and incline your heart to understanding!

For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding.

If you seek her as silver and search for her as hidden treasures

Then you discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God

For the Lord gives wisdom from His mouth, come knowledge and understanding.

What Do You Say?

Wisdom and discernment, some say, are the same words. Wisdom is discernment, and discernment is wisdom.

Others say wisdom and discernment are words that perform or have individual meanings and duties. If you have wisdom, it does not mean you automatically have discernment.

And still, others think that wisdom and discernment are common sense, which we are all born with. Common sense is sound and prudent judgment based on simple facts, usually what you can gather from your five senses.

Let us see what the Word says.

Proverbs Chapter Two reads.

Verse two – Make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding.

Verse three – For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding.

Definition

Using wisdom is to apply understanding, leading to good, sound decisions and making great judgment calls.

Discernment is to identify the underlying cause, the motives, and the intention of the situation. Is it good or bad, real or fake, genuine or deceitful?

Upon careful examination of these two scriptures, it becomes evident that they convey distinct meanings.

Wisdom and discernment intertwine harmoniously, for through their fusion we can truly unlock the abundant blessings that God has given upon us.

God even tells us how to look for wisdom and discernment. He says in

Proverbs Chapter Two reads,

Verse four – If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures –

Thinking about how someone would look for treasures and silvers, they would look for it with earnestness and focus;

they would not stop until they found it—

knowing that when they found the treasure, they could have their hearts desired when they discovered it, and their lives would be easier if they use wisdom and discernment with that newfound treasure.

Or the meaning behind searching for something earnestly. When I have misplaced my keys and am running late for an appointment – everything gets turned over in the house: pillows, bedcovering, looking underneath things, over and behind doors, opening up drawers,

I search until I find.

That is how God wants us to seek out His wisdom and discernment with purpose, knowing that it will benefit us and make our lives and those around us easier.

In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, it’s refreshing to discover that we truly have hidden gems, wisdom, and discernment that can bring us joy and fulfillment. The benefits of incorporating them into our lives are priceless, casting a positive light on our lives and enriching our experiences.

Proverbs Chapter 2 –

Verse Five – Then you discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.

When we cry for discernment, lift our voices for understanding and search for it like we are searching for gold.

Proverbs Chapter 2 –

Verse Six: For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

God tells us we can get both wisdom and discernment from Him. All that we need is contained in Him. It is up to us to seek it out. Unlike when we sometimes have to go to several stores to get what we need,

God tells us to seek Him out, and He has the wisdom and discernment for us.   

How do I apply Wisdom and discernment in my life today?

• When God blesses you with two job offers, ask discernment for which one? Which one will give you what you need, and sometimes it is not always the one that pays more.
• Is this the person you should spend the rest of your life with?
• If you are angry, ask God to give you discernment (understanding) as to why and how to work towards peace.
• If you come into a win fall of money, ask for discernment on the best way to spend it.
• Difficult relatives, co-workers, and family members ask for wisdom and discernment in handling the situation.
• And dealing with unforgiveness, asking God how you should seek healing to move on with your life.
• Or if you have children, ask God to give you His wisdom on how to raise them and discernment in every situation regarding your children.

If the scriptures said to get wisdom only, then there would not be any question that wisdom would be the only thing we need to ask for. But that is not the case here. God clearly states, we are to go after both.

In Conclusion

How can we get God’s wisdom?

James 1:5

If you lack wisdom, ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

And we need both wisdom and understanding.

Proverbs 3:13

“Happy is the man that finds wisdom and the man that gets understanding.”

Understanding is deeper than knowledge. There are many people who know you, but few who understand you.
