Wisdom of it all – Proverbs 14:1
Proverbs chapter 14 is packed with wisdom. We start at the beginning.
Proverbs Chapter 14
Verse 1
The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands, the foolish one tears hers down.
Proverbs 14:1
I grew up in an era where women were keepers of their homes. They cooked, cleaned, made sure the children got off to school, did their homework, did shopping for the household, and a host of other things.
My mom kept her home, and my dad worked outside the house.
I was privileged to see two people on the same page about running the household and raising children.
I am reminded of the idiom “Keep the home fires burning.”
this means maintaining a daily routine and providing the necessities in a home or community.
What are the necessities of life? Food, water, shelter, health care, and clothes. Those are the basic ones.

Chapter 14, verse 1 of Proverbs, speaks of two types of women who are keepers of their home.
One brings peace, while the other brings discord.
One brings order, while the other brings disorder.
I am not saying that the peaceful household is perfect. Far from it, but the wise woman’s goal is to build up her household. To build up something means to make it stronger and improve.
I believe that the state of a person’s mind reflects the home’s condition.
I felt immediate peace and safety in some homes I have walked into.
Other homes I have walked in and wanted to walk right back out.
The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands, the foolish one tears hers down.
- What else speaks to a wise woman?
- There should be a level of peace in the household.
- The children should be safe and cared for.
- A partner should not dread coming home
Personal Thoughts –
My Childhood Home
I learned as a child growing up in a home where my mother was a wise woman who built her house. At the same time, Dad worked and eventually retired.
I also learned that we have different seasons for different areas of our lives.
And once we were in high school doing our own thing. Mom pursued her career and did quite well.
I learned something else-
She still ensured the household ran smoothly, whether she was working outside of the home or not.
Working inside or outside the home are full-time jobs, and both deserve to be acknowledged because both are vital for the survival of the family unit.

The Wife of Noble Character
10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband has complete confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.
12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
Proverbs Chapter 31
One of the most famous chapters in the bible when describing a woman of character, a woman of integrity, a woman of God. This is the same type of woman we are discussing today.
Which household are you in?
The Foolish Woman: if you find yourself in this type of household, ask God to help you restore or create peace in your home one area at a time and one day at a time.
The Wise Woman: if you find yourself in this type of household, amen. And continue to ask for God’s guidance.
