How to Trust Yourself
How to Trust Yourself
Learning to trust yourself doesn’t happen overnight. If you’ve spent years second-guessing your decisions, worrying about mistakes, or seeking others’ approval, trusting your judgment can feel uncomfortable.
But self-trust is something you can rebuild. It begins with recognizing that you don’t have to be perfect to make good decisions. You have lived through difficult moments, learned from your mistakes, and gained wisdom along the way.
Trust Yourself
Trusting yourself means listening to that wisdom, honoring your values, and believing you can handle whatever comes next.
1. Keep the Promises You Make to Yourself
Start small. If you tell yourself you’re going to take a walk, make a phone call, finish a project, or set a boundary, follow through. Every time you keep a promise to yourself, you send a powerful message: I can count on me.
2. Stop Second-Guessing Every Decision
Not every decision requires endless analysis. Gather the information you need, pray about it, think it through, and then make your best decision. You may not always get it right, but you can trust yourself to learn and adjust when necessary.
3. Learn From Your Mistakes Instead of Punishing Yourself
Making a mistake doesn’t mean you can’t trust yourself. It means you’re human. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” ask, “What can I learn from this?” Wisdom often comes from experiences we wish had gone differently.
4. Listen to Your Inner Voice
Pay attention to what you feel, think, and know deep down. Sometimes we ignore our instincts because we’re afraid of disappointing someone else. Give yourself permission to pause and listen before automatically following someone else’s advice.
5. Give Yourself Credit for How Far You’ve Come
Take a moment to remember what you have already survived, overcome, learned, and accomplished. You have made it through days you weren’t sure you could handle. That history matters. Your past experiences can remind you that you are more capable than you sometimes give yourself credit for.
Trusting yourself doesn’t mean believing you’ll always make the right decision. It means knowing that even when you make a mistake, you can handle it, learn from it, and keep moving forward.
Give yourself permission to make decisions without constantly seeking approval, to learn without beating yourself up, and to grow without comparing your journey to someone else’s. And if you’re a person of faith, remember that self-trust doesn’t mean trusting yourself instead of God.
It means developing the wisdom and confidence to recognize the gifts, discernment, and understanding He has placed within you. You don’t have to know exactly what tomorrow.
Amen
