What People Say About You

What people say about you may matter, or it may not.

When I was younger, as I was figuring myself out and dealing with my insecurities, I was, unfortunately, completely at the mercy of what others thought of me.

If I felt that someone did not like me for any reason, I would allow that to control my thoughts.

The questions I would ask myself! ‘Why don’t they like me?’ ‘What did I do?’ ‘What did I say?’ Is it my clothes, my color, my hair? I do remember a brief period in high school when I was strong about not letting people define me, but somehow that started to wind down.

It is a horrible place to be because you are at the whim of others.

The shift from caring about what others thought or felt about me to not caring began in my 40s.

Spill The Tea

Spill The Tea is an idiom that means to share juicy gossip, news, or secrets.

I am sure we have all at some point been on both sides of this idiom. Either we were being gossiped about, or we were gossiping about others.

I used to say that if we can’t say it to the person, then we don’t need to say it to anyone.

Or, as my mother used to say,

If you don't have anything nice to say about a person, then don't say anything at all.

Later on I learned she was quoting

“If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” – Thumper (Bambi)

I found some other great quotes about gossip. Could you take a look?

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

“Gossip is just a tool to distract people who have nothing better to do from feeling jealous of those who are genuinely succeeding.” – Anna Godbersen

“People who judge you or talk behind your back usually have something missing in their own life.” – Unknown

“Don’t pay attention to what people say behind your back; they’re behind you for a reason.” – Unknown

“Karma has no menu. You get served what you deserve.” – Unknown

Conclusion of What People Say About You

I don’t know where you are in your journey with how you feel when others gossip about you. Because the truth is, some gossip is malicious and meant to hurt or destroy you.

Here are some scriptures to meditate on. The last one is my favorite.

Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. James 1:26
In Christ, we are safe from anything the enemy can throw at us! - Proverbs 18:10
