Favoritism
Favoritism can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. It shows partiality toward a person or group at the expense of others.
I am sure many of us have been shown favoritism or had our favorite person or people that we were drawn to for one reason or another.
This reminds me
of something that happened years ago. I was temporarily attending a hair school. Essentially, I was waiting to attend the school I had prayed for, so in the meantime, I attended this particular school while I was waiting.
When I enrolled, my paperwork was handled by these two gentlemen. Let’s call them Mr. Smith and Mr. Tyrone. 🙂
Every morning, they would bring donuts for the students. They would purchase a box of donuts, and the students would feast on them. Soon, I noticed they started bringing me my own small bag of donuts, apart from the other students.
Yay! for me. I had my own donuts, and how nice of them! I thought. Well, as you can imagine, that put a target on my back, and pretty soon, the small bag of donuts stopped coming in.
Oh, the disappointment. Lol
But I can tell you that many times, favoritism was shown, and I was on the negative end of it.
We all have our favorite possessions. I have my favorite pen, pillow, and blanket.
But what I do not have is a favorite child or grandchild.
When showing favoritism, it usually means the group of people or person is being mistreated.
And that is unfair at home, work, and school. It is wrong to show favoritism to one group of people based on their skin color or gender and mistreat others based on your preferences.
Favoritism can foster toxicity. Common signs include covering up someone’s mistakes and wrongdoing, unfairly promoting them, always making time for this person but not others, giving more praise, or overlooking their misdeeds while criticizing those you dislike.
If you realize that you are on the negative end of favoritism, protect yourself as much as possible.
If you can limit your contact with the person, that’s good. If you can remove yourself from the situation, that is even better.
However, that is not always realistic. The first thing to do is pray and ask for God’s protection, and to ask for daily wisdom on how to deal with negative behavior from others.
If you are at the workplace, here are some actions you can take
- Keep a record (paper trail)
- Address it.
- Please report it.
Always remember there is One who will never show favoritism!
For God shows no partiality.
Roman 2:11
For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.
Deuteronomy 10:17
