Peace of Wisdom – Be mindful of how you think
We have reached the last blog post in the series of ‘How to Turn Bad Thoughts into Good Ones!
Depending on what source you read we have 6,000 to 12,000 thoughts daily and most of them are negative.
Here are some interesting facts about our brain
Our thought life can and will dictate our every move. That is why it is important to be mindful of what we are thinking of daily.
“If we understood the power of our thoughts, we would guard them more closely. If we understood the awesome power of our words, we would prefer silence to almost anything negative. In our thoughts and words, we create our own weaknesses and our own strengths. Our limitations and joys begin in our hearts. We can always replace negative with positive.” –Betty Eadie
Let us do a quick review
Part 1 -What we watch it’s important to recognize that what we choose to watch can profoundly affect our mental and emotional well-being.
Just like we would not want our small children and grandchildren to watch explicit sexual scenes, graphic violence, anything that exploits abuses or hurts them. That is how we need to protect our sight from certain things that may trigger negative reactions.
Part 2 -What we listen to ‘The Power of Music’ as a reminder music can impact our mood in the positive and negative. Be mindful of what you listen to.
Part 3 – What we say. Oh, how we can use our words to heal or hurt. The choice is always ours. Positive words create positive thoughts and negative words create negative thoughts. It sounds elementary however when put into practice can save you a lot of heartache and grief.
The Final Segment
Taking a moment to consider what type of thoughts you may have. Part 4
Here is a great article I found on the different ways we may think.
10 Common Types of Cognitive Distortions
All-Or-Nothing Thinking – Black and white thinking, good or bad with no gray area.
Overgeneralization – If something happens one time that is bad this type of thinking feels it will be bad all the time.
Mental Filtering or Negative Filtering – Always focusing in on the negative and never the positive,
Discounting the Positive – Discounting the positive or explaining away the good.
Mind Reading and Fortune Telling – Believing that others think you are bad or a loser. Also not trying something new because you feel you will fail at it anyway.
Magnification or Minimization – Viewing a small mistake as an epic failure.
Emotional Reasoning – Believing that your emotions are always validated.
Should, Must, and Ought Statements – These statements can apply unrealistic rules to how we measure ourselves.
Labeling – Defining yourself or others based on one interaction.
Personalization and Blame – This person blames themselves or others for a situation when other factors may be involved.
If you find yourself feeling this way, it may be time to gently shift your perspective. Often, simply being aware of the areas where you might be struggling can pave the way for positive change. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey, and recognizing challenges is a significant step toward finding solutions.
In Summary
There are many things that can disrupt our thought processes. We can begin with a positive thought, only for it to quickly turn dark in an instant. It’s important to be aware of how we think, what we choose to watch, where we spend our time, and the words we speak, as these can profoundly affect our minds.
If you’re finding it difficult to cope with dark thoughts for any reason, please remember that you don’t have to remain in that place. While it may require effort to shift away from those negative patterns, know that it is achievable. God reminds us that we have a powerful force within us, and that no weapon formed against us will succeed, including our troubled thoughts. Amen!
