As you can see, we have yet another scripture warning us of our words.

Those words will trap us when we choose to speak evil words. Let us look at some evil words.

Sometimes, the lines may be blurred between what is evil and sinful and what is honest talk.

First the Definitions –

Honest – Fair, truthful, morals

Evil – tending to harm or hurt or extremely unpleasant

Sinful – is defined as morally wrong

Some examples of morally wrong or evil are

• Murder
• Stealing
• Rape
• Lying
• Breaking Promises

What is everyday ethics?

You may be asking what doing evil or wrong has to do with speaking evil. I am glad you asked. It has a lot to do with it.

It begins with a thought. That thought is formed in our mind; we begin to speak it and then eventually act on it.

I wanted to begin with our thoughts

• Take a look at these questions. What did you answer for number 1?
• Was it yes, I would keep the money because I feel I deserve it, or they should not have made the mistake?
• Or nope the money does not belong to me, and all money is not good money?

• The ATM spits out an extra $100 in your favor. Keep the money and your mouth shut?

• At a restaurant you notice your friend’s wife engaged in some serious flirting with another man. Tell your friend—and possibly ruin his marriage—or mind your own business?

• You can avail yourself of a free wireless connection by accessing the account of your next-door neighbor. Silly not to? 

• Your colleague is forever taking credit for your and other people’s work. Is it okay to exact a little revenge and for once take credit for her labors?

• Your friend is on her way out the door for a significant date and asks whether you like her blouse. Do you tell her the truth: It’s hideous?

• Is it all right to laugh at a sexist joke? Racist jokes?

Proverbs 12:13

There are hundreds of scriptures that speak on the power of our words and the damage they can do when we choose to use them carelessly.

Here are two of them

Matthew 12:36 – But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.

Ephesians 4:29 – Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

We should think before we speak – we cannot undo our words nor can we unhear them once they are spoken.

Summing it Up

Proverbs 12:13 reminds us that those who choose to use their words for evil will be trapped by their lies and those who choose to use their words to encourage and build up will avoid a lot of headaches, heartache and a boat load of trouble.
