Wisdom of it All

Why It’s Okay to Drop the Act and Be Yourself Now

Proverbs Chapter 12

Verse 9 (BBE)

He who is of low position and has a servant, is better than one who has a high opinion of himself and is in need of bread.

Verse 9 (Easy English)

A man may let people think that he is important. but this same man may not have enough food to eat. It is bad to be a man like that.

People may think that another man is not important. But, if that man has a servant, it is better to be a man like that.

Verse 9 (NET)

Better is a person of humble standing who nevertheless has a servant, than one who pretends to be somebody important yet has no food.

Being someone you are not…

1-Why It’s Okay to Drop the Act and Be Yourself Now

As you have noted, I have the same verse three times with different versions. When I first read this, I was a bit confused until I read a few other versions. And the message became more apparent.

There can be different situations that would cause us to withhold areas of our lives or parts of ourselves from others. Maybe when you first meet someone, the work environment, social media, or the first few dates with someone.

It can be exhausting…

Social Media

I have only recently engaged in social media. I guess you can say I am still a newbie, and I am learning the ends and outs of it.

I have learned that you can take anything meant for good and turn it into a bad situation.

or you can take something meant for evil and turn it into a good situation.

The choice is always yours.

Hiding who you are and pretending to be someone else seems disingenuous, to say the least, even on social media.

Work Environment

And lonely.

1-Why It’s Okay to Drop the Act and Be Yourself Now

In the work environment, it is different. Your personal life should not be on display for all to see. Yet you do not have to put on airs and be something you are not.

You are your true self; you are just choosing not to divulge personal information about your life. When too much personal information intermingles with the work environment, it is a recipe for disaster.

Dating

Your dating life should proceed with caution in the beginning. Telling all your business on the first few dates would be information overload and could turn your potential suitor off.

The Biggest Question Is

How much does your private life differ from the life you are presenting to others?

Is it Vastly Different?

I get it you may not want to use your real name or tell intimate information about yourself on social media.

Or you may not want to share that you have health issues to a person after only a few dates.

Or you may not want to share with your boss or co-workers that you are having financial problems.

However, what you are presenting, what you are representing, is it a true version of yourself?

Are you hiding behind someone or something? And pretending to be someone you are not?

Verse 9 (NET)

Better is a person of humble standing who nevertheless has a servant, than one who pretends to be somebody important yet has no food.

Nothing more, nothing less because when we don’t, it can begin to work on our self-worth in a negative way.

When we pretend to be more than what we are, this can lead to

1. Resentment

2. Isolation

3. Low Self-esteem

We should remind ourselves to be true to who we are.

Summing It Up

When we do it God’s way, His way leads to fulfillment, satisfaction, and peace.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,  I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place and woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God. How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.”Psalm 139:14-18

We do not have to pretend to be someone we are not, and if we need or want something Jesus says to ask. Amen

    Great post.

I believe there is a way to stay true to yourself without necessarily revealing too much.
It can be through what you stand for.
