My dad has been recycling for years. During the day, he would set aside his materials for recycling, and in the evenings, he would carefully place them in the proper containers outside. Dad did this for many years. My mom would roll her eyes. Although she didn’t particularly care for the habit, she supported Dad when he did it.
Dad started this when I had moved out of the house and had a family of my own. I was intrigued by the process and had always wished I could get involved in recycling, but for some reason, I didn’t, at least not at the time. Watching my dad do this year after year with a smile on his face made me more intrigued.
So, it’s no surprise that when I went back to school and we had to write an essay, I chose the topic of recycling. It was titled ‘Reuse, Recycle, Repeat.’ I thought that was a cute title.
Here is an excerpt of my essay –
Recycling has always fascinated me; I often wonder if it’s really worth the time and effort. Where does the recycling material go, and what do these recycling companies do with used bottles, plastic, and paper?
I wouldn’t want to find out years later that all the time and effort I spent saving my bottles, plastic, and paper were pointless. The town I live in doesn’t offer a recycling service, so I would need to travel to the nearest recycling center, which would require more time and effort.
So, I started traveling to a recycling center near us. And every 2 weeks, I would gather my bottles, plastic, paper, and plastic bags and deliver them to the recycling facility. I felt proud that I was doing something to lessen my carbon footprint.
Well, three years later, our town started offering recycling services, which I appreciated greatly and have taken full advantage of. Sometimes the recycling bin is full to the top. I love it, and many of our neighbors also take advantage of this service.
This is simply one way I maintain a sustainable lifestyle.
