Uplifting Practices in a Self-Centered World: Tips for Everyday Living

This month, we are going to work on ourselves! You can add the word self at the beginning of any word and get a new word explaining how it connects to you—for example, self-assessment, self-assurance, self-management, self-made, self-reliance.

It deals with you from all angles, and we will cover some of those angels this month.

The definition of self is introspection or reflexive action, or in my words, it is dealing with (Me, Myself, and I) and YOU, of course!

Selfless

We are going to talk about the word “selfless.” this is concern with the needs of others.

Selfish

But First What Does Selfish Behavior Look Like?

Always believe their needs are more important than yours

Manipulates

Always look at what is in it for them.

Never does anyone a favor or put their selves out for you.

Does not empathize with others.

However-

Selfless

Selfless is the word this time! Selfless is one of those words that helps others. The word explains itself: think of others a little more than you think of yourself or think a little less of yourself and consider the needs of others.

It is good to think about others and their needs. This can put us in a happy and healthy headspace because we are now looking outside of ourselves and considering the needs of others.

I Think of Empathy and Sympathy

when I see the word selfless, I think of the words empathy this is sharing in other’s feelings and sympathy you feel sorry for someone’s sadness.

The only type of people that were at the top of the list of selfless were volunteers. At least, that is what I used to believe when I was younger. I used to think they were the only group who put themselves out there.

Of course, many people give selflessly every day in all areas. They may get paid or not, but it is usually not enough for what they genuinely do and give.

So, what are some selfless acts of kindness?

The list can go on, and the range can be a simple smile that brightens someone’s day to donate millions to a cause.

Holding the door open for someone to donate a large amount of money to help people experiencing homelessness, smiling at someone just because.

The beautiful thing about being selfless is it works wonders on our mental health, and your age, income bracket, ethnicity, and gender are not a factor. Yay!

My mother use to quote the first one often when I was growing up. So much until I thought she made it up – 🙂

Summing it up

There should always be a balance in everything we do. Too much of anything is not good including giving to the point where you neglect yourself. Finding balance in all aspects of life is important for our well-being.

We need to learn how to use our time, energy, and resources in a way that helps our relationships with others and our own personal growth.

Giving without restraint can lead to neglecting our own needs, ultimately hindering our ability to support others effectively.

It’s very important to find a good balance that focuses on taking care of yourself without ignoring the value of helping others.
