This post is for you because there is never an age where we stop praying for our children. The motive and purpose may sift as they age; however, the prayer never stops.

Those who care for children, whether as parents, guardians, or caregivers, carry a heavy duty for the well-being and progress of the children in their care.

This duty often involves — facing both praise and criticism based on the outcomes experienced by the children.

It’s a totally an impactful experience, as this influence and guidance directly shape the lives of the children.

Nurturing and molding young individuals can be both fulfilling and challenging, and those in this position must seek support and resources to assist them in their vital roles.

Each week, I pull a verse or two from the book of Proverbs and break it down as best as possible with God’s wisdom and discernment. I started Chapter 1 in August 2023. I have not covered every verse; however, I have covered every chapter thus far. (Well except chapter 8 in which I will cover in May) If you have missed some, here is the link to catch you up.

Parenting can be a challenging journey, and Proverbs chapter ten verse one resonates with many of us, especially those with children at various stages of development. It emphasizes the crucial role of parents in guiding their children, especially when they stray or make unwise decisions. It’s a reminder of the responsibility we have to provide guidance and discipline, even during the most difficult times.

Today we will delve into Proverbs Chapter 10

Verse 1

A wise son brings joy to his Father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.                Easy English

This verse expresses solid feelings and essential ideas about the heavy responsibility of shaping a young person’s life. It shows how crucial it is to pray and seek guidance from God when raising and caring for children.

This verse perfectly captures the ongoing commitment of praying for our children, not just when they’re young but as they mature and face the world. It emphasizes that a parent’s prayers for their children are everlasting, changing over time but never stopping.

And we can add this with today's scripture for our children as well.

Today we are in Proverbs Chapter 10

Verse 1

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.  BSB              

 

Or said another way.

A wise son makes his father happy. a fool (those who refuse to listen to the word of God) makes his mother a sad woman.

Whether doing well in school, finishing their chores, winning an award, or navigating adulthood with wisdom, each positive action deeply touches the parent’s heart and brings a smile.

The image shows how a child’s love greatly impacts their parent’s happiness. It conveys the timeless and universal theme of family love and joy.

It will not matter who you speak to, what country you go to, and what language they speak. If you are a parent/guardian, whether that child is young or old, we are happy when they succeed. A good parent/guardian would never want to see their child suffer or make life harder for themselves.

I understand there may be dysfunctional parent-child relationships, and we will discuss this at another time.

But for this blog, I am dealing with healthy parent–child relationships.

Laying the Foundation

If someone accepts this child because of Me, then he accepts Me. If he accepts Me, then he is not only accepting Me. He is also accepting God, who sent Me.                       Mark 9:37

**This is Jesus speaking to the disciples who were arguing on who was the greatest. That those seeking power should instead be seeking how to help others with no power like children.

Jesus is letting them know how important children are to the kingdom and that children are not only valuable, and humble, but also, seen and heard.

Be careful that you do not think that these little people are not important. What I say is true. The angels who watch over them always remain with my Father in his home. And those angels speak to him – Matthew 18:10

** This is Jesus speaking once again about the importance of how high God places children. God thinks highly of our children, so much so that the angels are protectors and are telling God how they are being treated. We are held accountable for how we treat children all of us.

What Role Does Parents Play?

We have an awesome responsibility as parents towards our children – until we take our last breath! Here are some scriptures -

Fathers do not make your children resentful. Otherwise, they’ll become discouraged.   ISV Colossians 3:21

Fathers do not provoke your children to anger but raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.   N.E.T. Ephesians 6:4

No punishment makes us happy at the time when we receive it. It makes us sad, then. But later, we know that the punishment has taught us good things. It has made our lives more like God wants us to be. Then, we are without trouble deep inside ourselves because we are right with God.       Easy English Hebrews 12:11

A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom,
    but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother.

What Role Does the Child Play?

Always be very kind to your father and your mother. Then, you will live for many years in the country the Lord will give you.

Children, obey your parents. This is what the Lord wants. It is the right thing to do. v2 The first rule that God gave with a promise says: ‘Always remember how important your father and your mother are. v3 Then as a result you will be happy, and you will live for a long time on the earth.’

Doing this helps children align themselves with what God desires, which is to be kind and do what their parents ask of them. They only want the best for you. I also take this to mean that because our parents have been around longer, they are wiser (or at least should be). They have been there and seen many things.

Many times, parents are not wanting their children to fall into traps or get caught up in the evil of the world. When a child listens to a loving parent, God’s protection is on that child’s life.

These scriptures have been a source of solace for me during both the most challenging and joyful moments of parenting. From the anxieties of childbearing to the milestones of school and college, and even as my children step into adulthood with their own families, these words have consistently soothed my soul.

Many times, you might feel compelled to step in, rescue, or assist. However, there are moments when God asks us to place our trust in Him when it comes to our children. Why? Believe it or not, He loves them just as much as He loves us, more than we can comprehend. The remarkable thing about God is that His love extends to all children, without favoritism or discrimination. He is inclusive and embraces everyone.

God’s peace in your situation

⁶ Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. ⁷ And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. NIV Philippians 4:6-7

God wants you to share to pour out to Him when there is a problem with your child. 

Tell God about all the things that make you sad or afraid or angry. Give your thoughts about those things to him and let them remain with him. Do this, because you matter to Him. Easy English 1 Peter 5:7

While you are believing for deliverance for your child - your speech must be what you want the situation to be not what it looks like.

Be careful not to say anything that is bad. Say only good things that will help people. Then you will help to make them strong. You will help to give them what they need. And so, your words will be good for those who hear them.

You are being aligned with God's will - will help your situation. Because you are able better to hear and understand what you are to do in your child's life     

Instead, think about the things that are important in the Kingdom of God. You should do everything that you can to obey God. Then God will give you the other things that you need.  BSB Matthew 6:33-34

Do not be afraid about anything. Do not let anything cause you trouble inside yourselves. Instead, tell everything to God. Pray to Him. Ask Him for everything that you need. And when you pray, always thank Him.

Our Creator has given everyone the responsibility to care for and protect the vulnerable, making sure they are not ignored or left alone. At the same time, parents need to show patience, understanding, and guidance to their children, being a source of wisdom and support.

And, children also need to respect and listen to their parents, understanding the good intentions behind their guidance. This mutual dynamic is the foundation of a nurturing and peaceful environment for the growth and development of children.
