When Life Feels Heavy

When Life Feels Heavy

Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Let’s face it. Sometimes we do not have all the answers, and sometimes we get discouraged, fed up, and just plain tired.

Tired mentally, physically, and all the in-between. Many of us have a lot on our plates.

In Matthew, Jesus is talking to people who are exhausted, not just physically, mentally, but soul-tired. Worn down by the pressures of life, the guilt, fear, and responsibilities.

Here, Jesus invites us to come to Him; He doesn’t tell us to figure it out and get ourselves together before we do. No, He invites us to come as we are.

And then He gives us a tremendous promise. He says I will give you rest. Not a nap, it is a relief. The kind of rest where you no longer have to prove yourself, earn love, or be on edge all of the time.

This is the kind of rest that says I will give you rest, not show it to you, not give it to you after you have done something for Him. There are no strings attached, no conditions to be met and no hoops to jump.

Jesus is describing a relationship. A beautiful relationship.

I am reminded of when our children were babies, so trusting and pure. When they fell asleep in my arms, their sleep looked so sweet and trusting, and when they awoke, they were full of energy and ready to take on the day.

This is where this scripture leads me. A trusting a relief. Somewhere where I do not have to put on a mask or pretend everything is okay when it is not, a place I feel safe.

Peace isn’t about trying harder; it is found in coming closer.

Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Reflective question for you

What are you carrying today that was never meant to be carried alone?
