The Art of Lowering the Bar: How to Set Realistic Expectations
How low do you want to go?

To be honest, if you had asked me that question earlier, I would have told you to bury the bar low so that all expectations would be gone.
However, since sleeping on it, I realized that is no way to live. You have to allow others to be who they are going to be and center in on you and those who truly love you and have your best interest at heart.

It’s not uncommon for us to project our own insecurities onto others, setting the bar low to protect ourselves from disappointment. We may feel that if we don’t expect much, we won’t be let down. However, this approach deprives us of the opportunity to grow and reach our full potential. It also limits our relationships, as we may not fully appreciate the qualities and capabilities of those around us.

By setting the bar low, we not only underestimate ourselves but also underestimate those who care about us. Each person has their own unique abilities and strengths, and by dismissing them with low expectations, we fail to acknowledge and nurture their potential.

In doing so, we miss out on the chance to build deep connections and truly experience the support and love that others have to offer.

Of course, it’s crucial to be realistic in our expectations, as setting impossibly high standards can lead to disappointment and a sense of failure. However, by finding a balance between pushing ourselves and recognizing the potential of others, we create an environment that encourages personal growth and fosters supportive connections.

Ultimately, it is essential to center on ourselves and our own progress, while also surrounding ourselves with individuals who genuinely care about us and have our best interests at heart. Building a community of love and support can provide the motivation and encouragement needed to surpass even our own expectations.

So, rather than burying the bar low, let’s embrace the beauty of growth and challenge ourselves to reach new heights. Let’s cultivate meaningful relationships with those who believe in us, and together, we can create a life filled with fulfillment and genuine connections.

Have you ever set the bar a bit too high regarding different things in your life?
  • Personal Goals
  • Relationships
  • Physical Appearance
  • Career goals

When expectations are set too high, there will be disappointments-
Disappointment is an emotion that can lead to sadness, anger, and/or stress.

So, let’s talk about disappointments; we have all experienced some form of disappointment in our lives.

No matter how careful one can be, sometimes we may place too high of an expectation on not only others but ourselves as well.

Once we realize that we may have tilted the bar too far one way or the other way, then what do we do to get it back to balance again?

Some may say to lower that bar even more than no one can hurt you, and you will not be disappointed in life ever again. Or some may say raise that bar so high that only a few will be able reach the goal.

Doing either would be unfair to all involved. Finding a balance between goals for your life and the expectations of yourself and others can create a harmony. You will know when you strike the right balance because it will not only feel better, but everything will fall into place.

And by doing this, we invite growth and development into our lives. Moreover, we allow ourselves to be open to the possibilities that exist within ourselves and within the relationships we cultivate.

Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.” ~

Alexander Pope

When you find your path, you must not be afraid. You need to have sufficient courage to make mistakes. Disappointment, defeat, and despair are the tools God uses to show us the way.

Paulo Coelho

Disappointments are inevitable; discouragement is a choice.
