Building Better Thought Habits
Have you ever caught yourself saying something and suddenly thought, “Wait a minute now!”
Sometimes we repeat things so often that we don’t realize how much power we give them. “I’m always tired.” “My back always hurts.” “That illness runs in my family.” “I’m lonely.” “Nothing ever changes.” I have said some of these things myself.
Think about what happens when you hear something over and over again. A song gets stuck in your head, a commercial slogan becomes familiar or a person’s criticism can replay in your mind long after the conversation ends.
What we repeatedly expose ourselves to can occupy our thoughts. That’s why Scripture tells us to renew our minds and to think about things that are true, honorable, pure, lovely, and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8 (NIV)
So what do we do?
We start by becoming aware.
The next time you hear yourself say, “I’m always sick,” stop and reconsider the word always. You might say, “I’m not feeling well today, but I am trusting God with my health.” If you feel lonely, you can acknowledge that feeling without turning it into your identity: “I feel lonely right now, but loneliness is not who I am.”
Your circumstances deserve your attention and your health deserves appropriate care. Your emotions deserve acknowledgment. But none of those things deserve to become your god, your identity, or the final word over your life.
“Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
— Romans 12:2
Maybe a little less worry begins with becoming more careful about what we allow to stay in our minds.
Amen.
