You don’t need to compare your life to theirs.

You don’t need to compare your life to theirs. It may sound easier to say than to do.

However, when I was busy looking at what others had or were doing and envying them,

  • I realized I was unhappy with what I had.
  • I was not dealing with my own insecurities because I was too busy being nosy.
  • too busy comparing,
  • too busy not being content with what God had given me,
  • and unwilling to put in the work it took to get those things.

Have you ever looked at someone else’s life and quietly thought, I wish I had what they have?

  • Maybe it’s their marriage
  • Their career
  • Their home
  • Or their confidence
  • Their Heath
  • Their financial security
  • Perhaps their ministry
  • Or that peace they seem to carry wherever they go.

Comparison has never been easier. Social media gives us a front-row seat to vacations, promotions, engagements, new homes, growing businesses, and seemingly perfect families. We see carefully edited moments, but rarely the struggles behind them.

Or how about reality shows that focus on a person’s extravagant lifestyle or living? They are built around drama, heightened lifestyles, and edited versions of people’s lives.

This constant comparison can open the door to jealousy and envy. Watching someone else’s lifestyle being celebrated on screen can trigger thoughts like “Why don’t I have that?” or “What am I missing?”

What are some things you can do to protect yourself from the green-eyed monster?

  1. First admit it – healing begins with honesty
  2. Count your blessings – write down 10 things you are thankful for today. Gratitude changes what your heart focuses on.
  3. Celebrate someone’s success—sincerely congratulate a friend. Celebration weakens the grip of jealousy.

Love Doesn’t Envy

Love is patient and kind, and is not jealous

I Corinthians 13:4

The moment we stop chasing someone else’s life will be the moment we start appreciating our own.

Grace and peace!
