Steal Your Peace

Steal Your Peace – Many things can steal your peace! Did you know that some of the shows you watch could be stealing your peace? Causing you to become agitated or anxious?

Growing up in the 60s and 70s, we had some pretty tame and calm shows compared with some of the shows today.

My favorites included pretty much any cartoon, as well as Andy Griffith, Bewitched, Star Trek, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Get Smart, Mission: Impossible, Carol Burnett, and Flip Wilson.

I watched shows that either made me laugh or made me think. Rarely, when I was done watching a show, did I feel angry or lose any sleep.

There were three main channels, and the last channel, I believe, went off by midnight.

If my memory serves me correctly, Saturday Night Live was the show that opened the door to many blended live performances with pre-recorded segments. Its hosts were from all over, and political satire and shock value were introduced, though not always in a tasteful way. And yes, as a teenager, I made it my favorite show for many years. But it also opened the door for many shows to raise the bar on shock value.

Here are a few things that may be slowly draining your peace. If you are feeling any of the following after watching your show –—

  • You feel emotionally heavy after watching them.
  • It normalizes toxic behavior.
  • You notice your thoughts are growing darker or more negative.
  • You become envious, or dissatisfied with your life.
  • And you excuse things that once bothered your conscience.

Then these shows are draining your peace.

The Scripture

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Proverbs 4:23

Reflection

Not everything that entertains you nourishes you. Some things slowly drain your joy, clarity, and peace before you notice.

This Week’s Action Step:

After watching something, ask yourself:

  • Do I feel lighter or heavier?
  • Do I feel more peaceful or more agitated?
  • More hopeful or more fearful?

Grace and peace!
