How to find peace when things aren’t perfect.
The word ‘contentment’ comes to mind. When you have inner peace, regardless of what’s happening around you, even if you lack the clothes, job, money, or relationship you want, you still feel satisfied with your life. You aren’t anxious or nervous because of any situation.
You might be searching for a better job or trying to lose weight, but your life isn’t filled with chaos or despair. You do what you have to do. If things come later rather than sooner, don’t lose hope; you’re still content with your situation, knowing it will improve.
First, I’d like to tell you what contentment is not – at least not for me.
- Contentment is not looking the other way and pretending something did not happen, bad or good; you are aware of what is happening around you. You choose not to respond in a way that will take you away from your peace.
- Contentment doesn’t mean you won’t feel some negative emotions temporarily. You just don’t stay there long; you readjust yourself and your emotions and get on with your day.
- Contentment doesn’t mean you’ll let others walk all over you.
- Contentment is not about wallowing in self-pity or condemnation.
Contentment means trusting in someone greater than yourself, knowing that the LORD has your best interests at heart. It is an inner peace, recognizing that nothing outside of you can bring lasting peace.
Contentment is faith in knowing that God has you. That He will provide for all of your needs and wants.
Contentment taught me to appreciate the small things in life and to stop constantly searching for something better. Or at least what I believed was better.
Matthew 6:25-34
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
Matthew 6:25-34
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
