Wisdom of it All

3 Top Reasons to Share a Secret Immediately.

Proverbs Chapter 11

Verse 13

13 Gossips can’t keep secrets, but a trustworthy person can.

Here, Solomon is speaking of two types of people.

  1. A gossiper
  2. A trustworthy person

I am genuinely conflicted with this one. Yes, on the one hand, we are to keep secrets when a person shares sensitive information with us.

And yes, that shows our integrity and honesty. I cannot count how many times I have done that. From I am having an affair, cheating, stealing, and all the in-betweens.

I listen without judgment and encourage them to do the right thing or the right thing for them at the time. I do not divulge their sensitive information because it is not mine to share.

But I have a question.

Can you cross the line keeping someone else’s secret? Can you go too far?

In light of the world, we are living in today – These are the things I decided I would not keep a secret.

Proverbs Chapter 11, Verse 13

13 Gossips can’t keep secrets, but a trustworthy person can.

Three things immediately popped into my head when I read this scripture.

I will explain myself. I would let them know they must share this information with the appropriate people. I would be there for support.

I would ask for God’s wisdom and discernment in each situation.

No, I would not shout it from the rooftop.

However, there is no way for me to know that a person is suffering so much that they want to take their life that I will sit back and do nothing.

There is no way if I know that a child, or adult is being molested or raped that I would just sit by and do or say nothing.

And, if I knew someone had ill intentions for an individual or a group of people, I would not sit idly by and do or say nothing.

I would ask God for wisdom in these cases.

Why?

For a person to reach out to you means they are crying for help and guidance. God is using you in that situation, so it is essential to ask for His guidance.

When someone asks for your help, it shows they trust and depend on you. Seeing this as a chance to offer comfort and support is essential.

Asking for divine guidance can give you the strength and clarity to help others. Approach these interactions with empathy and a sincere desire to assist, knowing you are a channel for grace and compassion.

As you help others, may you also find wisdom and comfort by seeking divine guidance.

Summing It Up

It is an awesome and delicate situation when someone shares sensitive information with you. I have drawn my line in the sand regarding what I would tell.

If someone were to take their life and I was aware of their despair but did not take any action, I would struggle to cope with the situation. I understand that ultimately, if a person is determined to end their precious life, there may be little I can do to change their mind. However, I would at least want to try. Even if that meant sharing that information with people who could help them.

If a child is being molested and comes to me in privacy – yes, I would tell the proper authorities to make sure the child is safe.

And if a person tells me that they feel like murdering someone, anyone – I would absolutely tell. And try and talk sense into the person.

In all situations it is not easy, and God’s strength, courage and guidance all things are possible.

Do you have a line drawn in the sand about secrets? How much is too much, and how far is too far?
